Healthy Breakfast Banana Splits with Fruit and Nutella

Breakfast banana splits with loads of topping options! Load your banana split with strawberry yogurt or any yogurt of your choice and go to town with fruit, nuts, cinnamon, and Nutella! A healthy, summertime breakfast or snack made in under 10 minutes.

Spoiler alert… these are actually the ingredients I use to make my current favorite smoothie.
These said smoothie ingredients got turned into a “banana split” one morning when I came home from a run craving all the sweet, creamy, fruity deliciousness these ingredients have to offer.  But to my deep sadness, the blender was being occupied by another family member who shall remain nameless.
I took a deep breath and just prepared all the ingredients in a measuring cup so that I could dump them all in when the green protein muck my dad calls a smoothie got cleaned up.

This hungry girl could hardly wait and started taking little bites out of the measuring cup while I waited oh so patiently. To my surprise – it was so yummy both in smoothie form and pre-smoothie form.
Enter: breakfast banana splits (!!!!)
Don’t be fooled by the “banana split” reference.. it’s totally healthy enough for breakfast, and maybe even more delicious. The yogurt replaces the ice cream and the fruit, ground flax seed, sliced almonds, and cinnamon replace the traditional banana split toppings.
To make the splits, slice the banana in half and top with all the things… Our favorites:
Strawberry yogurt (<– Strawberry is our fav for extra flavor)
Sliced almonds
Ground flax seed (<– adds a crunchy texture that can’t be beat)
Strawberries
Mangoes
Kiwi
Blackberries
Nutella (for the brave at heart… optional but oh so necessary)
Dash of cinnamon – just do it
And a sprinkling of powdered sugar or a drizzle of honey (just for fun – totally optional!)
These are so versatile you can easily adjust your fixings to suit your tastes.

Ingredients:

1 ripe, yet firm banana, peeled
1/2 cup strawberry yogurt
(optional) 2 tablespoons Nutella.
2 tablespoons sliced almonds
1 teaspoon ground flax seed
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup fresh strawberries/kiwi/mangoes/peaches/blackberries or any other fruit you’d like
honey/powdered sugar for sprinkling and extra sweetness

Directions:

  1. Split the banana lengthwise and lay the two halves in a bowl. Top banana with yogurt.
  2. If using Nutella – warm in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds, or until it is very runny. Use a spoon to drizzle the Nutella over the yogurt, and sprinkle the almonds, ground flax, and cinnamon over top.
  3. Top with the strawberries, kiwis, mangoes, blackberries and a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Dig in!
